Blazer Built Right: How CPP Suspension Transformed This '71 K5

There’s something iconic about a well-built K5 Blazer—especially when it’s tastefully modernized with performance gear that doesn't compromise the classic look. This spotlight focuses on Zack Counkle's 1971 K5, a project that blends trail-ready toughness with street-worthy refinement, made possible with a well-curated mix of Classic Performance Products suspension, brakes, and steering components.

Follow along as we break down the highlights of this incredible build.

Chassis and Suspension Upgrades

To get the ride dialed in just right, the builder leaned on a full lineup of CPP suspension components. Up front, the factory arms were replaced with our CPP totally tubular upper and lower control arm conversion kit for 1971-72 C10s (Part# 6387FCO-K7172), providing improved geometry and better articulation. These were paired with Viking coilovers, delivering both ride comfort and tunable performance.

In the rear, things got serious with our Viking rear coilover conversion kit for 1963-72 trucks (Part# 6372RCOK-56). Designed for a 5-6” drop, this setup transformed the stance and handling of the K5. To handle the added suspension load and improve rear end stability, the builder added CPP’s total tubular rear shock crossmember (Part# 6372RTSC-B)—a go-to upgrade for reinforcing the rear frame under stress.

Brakes and Spindles: Modern Stopping Power

Stopping power was brought up to modern standards with the CPP X10 Big Brake Kit (Part# 6370SWBK-X10-5R). This system features our proprietary 2.5” drop spindles combined with 13” rotors—a huge upgrade in both appearance and brake response. Designed to work with modern wheels, the CPP X10 Series spindle system also improves front-end geometry while reducing unsprung weight.

Steering That Tracks True

To complement the new suspension and braking setup, CPP’s steering components helped button up the handling. A new pitman arm for 1967-72 C10s (Part# FA694) and an OE-style idler arm (Part# FA619) ensured proper steering alignment and response. Combined with the geometry updates from the suspension, this setup delivers sharper road feel without sacrificing comfort.

Out back, CPP’s double-adjustable rear track bar (Part# 6572DATB) was installed to center the rear end and allow precise axle location. It's supported by a matching traction bar bracket system (RTAS, TAFMB, and bolt-on bracket Part# CP12173), giving the K5 the stability it needs under throttle.

Fuel System: Ready for EFI

With performance and reliability in mind, the builder went with CPP’s 69-72 EFI-ready Blazer fuel tank (Part# TM6372-BZT). This system provides the clearance and layout needed to run fuel injection cleanly in a classic chassis. Alongside it, the FIIK255-90 and CPFFK-S kits handled plumbing and connections, completing a reliable fuel delivery system that’s hidden cleanly under the vehicle.

Finishing Touches: Power Steering Essentials

A few critical power steering pieces brought everything together. CPP fittings and adapters like Part# 605ANF-OR, FR545-05X58, FR590-05X06, and FR590-05X1116 were used to route and connect everything properly, eliminating leaks and mismatched fittings. The result was a clean engine bay and a power steering system that performed right out of the gate.

Final Thoughts from the Builder

"Everything has been working as it should, so we are satisfied with the products."

That kind of feedback is what we love to hear. This K5 blends street-ready handling, modern drivability, and timeless looks—all built on a solid foundation of CPP components. We’re proud to be a part of this project and can’t wait to see more from @zcjr72 as the build continues to evolve.
